Breeding notes
(by Bruno Kneubuehler)
- please read my notes on successfully breeding Phyllium
- this culture originates from the area of Oiwa, a village about 100 km to the west of Bulolo (Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea)
- incubation about 6 - 7 months, some nymphs can hatch even months after the first nymphs
- food plants:
- I have kept mine on Salal (Gaultheria shallon)
- most probably bramble (Rubus spp.), hazelnut (Corylus avellana) or beech (Fagus spp) is accepted too
- the collector fed them on Guava (Psidium guajava)
- their natural food plant is not known
- I have kept nymphs from L1 to about L4 in an airy netting cage (Free-Standing-Setup) at around 60 - 65% rH
- older nymphs and adults (especially males) are better kept at a higher humidity of about 75%
- spray regularly but let water dry up before you spray again
- females about 8 cm, males about 6.5 cm
- this species is prone to "cannibalism"
- males are rather delicate and they loose legs easily, so one should handle them very carefully
- overall this Phyllium species is rather easy to keep
